Background Information

Bukora Technical Secondary School is public school owned and managed by Kirehe District, established with the overarching goal of contributing to Rwanda’s national strategy of building a knowledge- and skills-based economy.

After observing the persistent challenges faced by both refugee and host community youths particularly related to the limited vocational training options , Kirehe District took a strategic decision to establish a local technical secondary school.

The district, recognize the importance of empowering its population with practical and job-oriented skills and initiated the construction of Bukora Technical Secondary School in collaboration with its key partners.

The school was built during the 2023–2024 academic year through a joint effort led by the Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA) in partnership with the World Bank under the Jyambere Project, which aligns with the Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework (CRRF). The initiative reflects Kirehe District's commitment to inclusive development by addressing the specific educational and economic needs of both Rwandan citizens and refugees.

The school aims to reduce youth unemployment, promote self-reliance, and foster socio-economic integration by equipping students with relevant technical skills.

So far the school has the following trades:

  • Plumbing Technology
  • Manufacturing Technology
  • Tailoring
  • Hairdressing
  • Building Construction Technology
  • Water and Irrigation Technology

These trades were selected based on labor market needs and development priorities in the region, ensuring that graduates are well-positioned for employment or self-employment in both local and national contexts.
